Letting the kids have their say
“I like youth club because it’s a meeting point with all my friends where we can chill, play sport and games.”
“I can speak to the Reestablish team when I’m not ok.”
“In the school holiday we went to a place called YHA. It’s an amazing place to go and walk in the peak district and go raft building, abseiling down a viaduct and more amazing activities. My personal favourite was raft building because it was testing our ability to work as a team and communicate, to make something and see if it works.”
“On residential I most enjoyed the abseiling because it tested my ability and made me overcome my fear of heights.”
“Whilst away I liked caving and all the water activities. I liked crawling in deep water and being a leader.”
“I have learnt more about my strengths and weaknesses. How to control my anger better.”
“Sierra Leone has most definitely got to be the most beneficial experience of my life so far. It seems surreal to think that just 2 weeks can be so life changing, influential and powerful. It is hard to describe how much it has impacted me, my future, my opinions and my general ideas about life.” (Female, 17)
“My son has changed since he came away. We don’t argue like we used to. Now he listens. He has grown up a lot.” (Mum of 15 year old lad)
“I want to thank you for taking me, it changed my life. I used to have panic attacks all the time before I went and have hardly had them at all since I’ve got back. I now control my anger better and have gone back to school.” (Male, 15)
“I already had over 30 criminal convictions before I went to Sierra Leone in December 2011. Since returning I haven’t been arrested once.” (Female, aged 21, quoted July 2013)
“In the short time that I was away, I learnt that happiness isn’t something that can be switched on…it is a feeling that you are not on your own and that you are an individually special and cared for person.” (Male, 17)
“I surprised my self how well I managed in such an extreme environment. I learned how to cope with my anger and that I don’t need to smoke cannabis to go to sleep.” (Female, 20)
“I learnt the difference between need and want.” (Female, 19)
